Labor Day, September 7th of this year, is celebrated on the first Monday in September which always allows for a long weekend celebration. The first Labor Day in the United States was observed on August 26, 1878, in Boston, by the Central Labor Union of New York, the nation's first integrated major trade union. It became a federal holiday in 1894, when President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. The first Labor Day celebration consisted of a street parade followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations and is how we got the traditional ways we still celebrate the holiday today.
Labor Day is often regarded as a day of rest and parties and we typically celebrate with picnics, barbecues, fireworks, water sports, and days at the beach!
